Koryu Uchinadi Karate

Marc Mathews Koshinkan Dojo - Newcastle Australia

Adults Class

General warm up and stretching: Through a traditional Junbi Undo exercise that has been tried and tested for hundreds of years, the student will achieve improved cardiovascular fitness and a general increase in overall stamina. The specific stretching methods allow the student to see a noticeable improvement in flexibility in just a few weeks.

Foundation training: Foundation training is a repetition of individual punching and kicking techniques. Through repetition training, the correct foundation technique is developed quickly and through proper form, power and speed are achieved. Without a solid foundation at the start of your training, it's impossible to build an all round martial artist.

Solo Drills: The combination of specific punching and kicking drills trains the mind and body to automatically remember a sequenced combination of effective techniques. These drill sets develop a muscle memory of specific combinations, targeted at the vulnerable areas of the human body in response to "Habitual acts of Physical Violence". What is "Habitual acts of Physical Violence"  you ask? It's the type of attack common in a real situation, not what you see in the competitive arena.

Pad work: Through the use of kick shields and focus mitts, students learn to develop power and speed and feel the realism of impacting an opponent.

Two person drills: Specific pre-arranged two person drills develop timing and distancing skills. They also teach the student how to cover up and use evasive movement to move out of danger, while also learning how to bridge the gap and deliver a counter attack. The two person drills teach more than just punching and kicking, they also incorporate joint locks, strangulations, throws and techniques of restraint, both standing and on the ground.

Self Defence: With the schools focus being on Habitual Acts of Physical Violence, These common attacks and responses are drilled in the class to ensure the students have enough confidence to use them, should they ever be in a situation where they have no choice but to defend themselves.

Kata: Kata is a series of choreographed moves in a fixed pattern intended to help students remember techniques and is a closely guarded, secretive practice. Kata is the very reason karate, as an art, has been preserved and passed down to this day.

Warm down and stretching: Through a traditional warm down exercise called Seri Undo, the body is returned to its normal functioning state and the student’s flexibility is further enhanced.
